The face is a dynamic structure that constantly moves to eat, drink, and show our various feelings and expressions. Wrinkles result from a combination of many factors. It’s not just about cellular changes that can occur over time, reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals in the sun and the environment. When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. And when you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract and cause crow’s feet. BOTOX® works beneath the skin’s surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes frown lines and crow’s feet.
WHAT IS BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is the only FDA-approved treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of both moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet lines in adults. It is also used to soften the horizontal lines on the forehead.
IS BOTOX® SAFE?
BOTOX® is one of the most extensively studied medical aesthetic treatments and is approved for cosmetic use in 78 countries. BOTOX® has a record of experience that aesthetic specialists know and trust. And, the safety and efficacy of BOTOX® have been evaluated in both Allergan sponsored clinical trials as well as in over 417 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals.
HOW DOES BOTOX® WORK?
BOTOX® targets the underlying cause of dynamic wrinkles, which are wrinkles that occur only when you are animating. Over the years, through the repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, and raising your eyebrows, lines will develop. When you inject BOTOX® into the muscles that cause these movements, you are temporarily reducing the muscle activity. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of your crow’s feet lines, frown lines between your brows, and the horizontal lines on your forehead.
WHEN SHOULD I SEE RESULTS?
You may begin to notice results in as little as 24 to 48 hours, but it may take up to 2 weeks to take full effect.
HOW LONG DOES BOTOX® LAST?
It varies from patient to patient, but good results usually last three and a half to four months.
DOES IT HURT?
Most patients describe a Botox injection feeling like a "pinch."
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY VISIT?
Your comfort is a top priority to us, so we first apply a topical numbing cream prior to your BOTOX® treatment to help alleviate any discomfort associated with the procedure. The skin is then cleaned off and injected. The procedure itself takes no more than 10 minutes.
IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME?
No. In fact, many patients will come during their lunch hour and return to work immediately after. However, no matter what time your appointment is, you’ll be able to go about your normal routine immediately after you leave our office.
WILL I HAVE ANY MOVEMENT LEFT AFTER A BOTOX® TREATMENT?
Our goal is to achieve the look you desire. Some patients wish to have very little movement, while other patients like to simply soften the movement. However, you should not lose the ability to show expression when you are treated by someone who is licensed, trained, and a medical expert in facial anatomy.
DOES BOTOX® HAVE SIDE EFFECTS?
Every drug has side effects. Luckily, they tend to be minor, short-lived, and are NOT permanent. In one to five percent of cases, there can be mild droopiness of the eyelid or eyebrow, which usually goes away within two weeks, and some patients experience slight bruising. However, most patients do not experience any side effects at all.
DOES THE BOTOX® GO TO OTHER PARTS OF MY BODY?
No. BOTOX® stays local to the muscle where it was injected. After the injection, BOTOX® is metabolized and broken down into natural byproducts by the body.
WHAT’S THE IDEAL AGE TO START USING BOTOX®?
There is no set age when you should start using BOTOX®. You can start at whatever age you decide you would like to soften your lines and wrinkles. There is also no issue with long term use.
DO MEN RECEIVE BOTOX®?
Yes. BOTOX® has also been clinically evaluated in male patients. In clinical studies for moderate to severe frown lines, 17.5% of patients treated with BOTOX® were men. In the clinical studies for moderate to severe crow's feet, male patients comprised approximately 10% of patients treated with BOTOX®. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 10% of all cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2014 were on men - that is more than 1 million cosmetic procedures. The number of cosmetic procedures for men increased by 273% from 1997 to 2014.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Since each patient needs different amounts of BOTOX® depending on the numbers of areas being treated, the cost of a BOTOX® treatment varies. We recommend you come in for a cosmetic consultation so that we can provide you with an individualized treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs, along with giving you the total cost for your BOTOX® treatment.
